In the years since my retirement I have enjoyed traveling all over the World, sometimes as an independent traveler, more often as a member of an organized group. Recently, as a result of advancing years and a series of serious falls my mobility has been greatly restricted. Independent travel is out of the question and finding an agency that sponsors groups equipped to deal with persons with mobility challenges has been discouraging. Recently though, I was put in touch with a group called Wheelchair Escapes. I got in touch with them and happily was able to join them on a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s awesome Oasis of the Seas. Kristy Lacroix, the owner and principal agent for Wheelchair Escapes first suggested a scooter that was waiting for me in my cabin. Kristy was with us all the way, smoothing out any issues and anticipating our every need. For people of all ages with mobility issues, I can only recommend traveling with Wheelchair Escapes and Kristy Lacroix.

I wanted to share some photos with you after our fantastic trip that you created for us in Alaska. The trip was incredible and Alaska is so big and diverse that it is hard to describe. I thank you for all your help and numerous phone calls to hammer out the details. It was worth it and the crown jewel, Denali, was majestic. Your help and attention to details, show your vast travel experience. I would recommend this trip to everyone.

Mike and Peggy;

We had a fantastic time and are looking forward to our next cruise. As this was my first cruise while using a power chair, I had no idea what to expect. The ship itself was more than we could have imagined. Unbelievable doesn’t seem to describe it properly. As far as the accessibility is concerned, I was blown away by the size of the bathroom and the stateroom. All amenities for the wheelchair user were impressive and laid out for the wheelchair user. The only improvement I can think of is having signage in the theater that would point the able bodied away from the wheelchair section.

What can I say about our traveling companions? What a fantastic group to travel with. Everyone was so nice and understanding of each others needs. We hope to see you all of you again soon.

For ten years I have wanted to go on a cruise. I was reluctant because of my disability. I saw an ad in the PN Magazine for Wheelchair Escapes and decided to call Kristy. She was able to answer all of my questions all of my questions and assure me that my needs would be met. To my amazement, everything was great! I couldn’t have asked for a better time. The accommodations on the ship, the service, and the entertainment were better than I expected. The members of the group were all very upbeat. I would definitely do this again. In fact, I have already made my next reservation on Kristy’s next group cruise.

First, I want to say how impressed I am with Kristy’s knowledge on accessible travel. I will not go anywhere without consulting with her again. The Allure is a wonderful ship. The stateroom was wonderful for accessibility and so was the rest of the ship. The service, food, and entertainment were also excellent. I especially enjoyed the Park Cafe’. We have never traveled with a group before and I want to say I hope you continue to offer that option. It was so nice for Fritz to have other male wheelchair users to chat with. He enjoyed going to Sorrento’s with the guys for a beer and conversation without the wives. For myself, as Fritz’ caregiver, I found it reassuring chatting with the wives that were also their husbands caregivers. We also had time to go off on our own. We would highly recommend Kristy as well as the Allure of the Seas. We were so happy we have already booked our next cruise on Royal Caribbean.

Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed cruising with you and Jerry and your group on the Allure of the Seas. I can remember how skeptical I was when you we explained the merits of sailing on this huge ship especially with the possibility of waiting in long lines for dining and entertainment. Today we are still wondering where the 6000 passengers were as we moved throughout the ship enjoying each moment. As you know, Rose and I have been on over thirty cruises and I must compliment you on the concern, attention, and efforts you made for us to truly enjoy the Allure. This was by far out BEST cruise and we look forward to our family cruise on the Oasis in March. (John and Rose are able bodied.)

Barbara;

As you know, this was my eighth cruise. I was amazed at being on the largest ship in the world with over 6000 passengers and having so much room. I never felt crowded. I was able to locate a chaise lounge every day with no problem. That has always been an issue on other ships. The check in process didn’t even take fifteen minutes. The disembarking was a breeze. Royal Caribbean has this down to a science. The entertainment was wonderful. I especially enjoyed The Blue Planet. I have already booked my next Royal Caribbean cruise! (Barbara is able bodied)

Karen; OMG, everything was freaking awesome!! We had a fantastic time, and the kids were thrilled with everything! The only bad part was leaving!!! I will have pictures on Facebook soon. Thanks for all of your expertise!

Lily, Kathryn; First and foremost, thank you for your expertise and professionalism when booking our cruise on Royal Caribbean‘s Allure of the Seas. The fact that you are well versed in travel for handicap individuals was definitely an asset for us. For without your knowledge and guidance, i doubt our 20th wedding anniversary cruise would’ve been as amazing as it was! The handicap accessible cabin was exactly that and more. I had plenty of room in which to maneuver my scooter and even turn around in the cabin! The bathroom was wonderful; roll-in shower, fold down shower seat. easily accessible vanity and sink. We were thrilled to be on Deck 12, close to the elevators and with an amazing balcony! We used the balcony every day so relaxing. We would never have imagined such a beautiful, accessible room with out your help. You picked an amazing ship and ports-of-call for us. The Allure is HUGE, beautiful with something for literally everyone We were never bored and l have never felt so “free” while being physically challenged. Everyone on the ship went Out of their way to help me. Kristy, I even zip lined! The Royal Caribbean sports team told me I could do it and they would help me. By God, they were right and it was exhilarating! Truthfully, we never had any problems waiting for the elevators and people were extremely polite and helpful with letting me load and unload.

You were right on with the Park Cafe and their roast beef sandwiches out of this world. We ate there several times and my husband has said it was the best roast beef he’s ever had. Personally. I enjoyed the Windjammer dining room as I loved Sitting by the windows with the perfect ocean view! We dined at Chops and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious filet mignon. I still rave about the potatoes and prosciutto side dish! it was a lovely experience and we can‘t wait to cruise again on the Allure to try 150 Central. We ate, we drank, we gambled, we slept in, we did what we want. when we wanted and it was all what we wanted thanks to you! Honestly, we didn’t even get off the ship in Nassau. Since that was the first full day, we slept in and had breakfast on our balcony. We don’t feel that we missed much as there were so many activities on the ship. We actually went up to the Solarium and enjoyed some quiet time in the sun, reading and relaxing.

You had recommended Aqua Action Divers in St. Thomas for a scuba diving experience and you hit the nail on the head! Sam and Diane (owners) were unbelievably helpful and accommodating of my disability and desire to scuba dive. My husband (who is able bodied) and I took the Discover Scuba course. We decided to do the shore dive. As a person with Muscular Dystrophy, l have very limited movement in my limbs. They used a handicap beach wheelchair to get me in the water and once in, Sam and Diane put the equipment on me. We went through safety protocol and then, off we went! Sam and Diane stayed with me and another (five master (Brian) was with my husband. I have never felt so free. I just glided along, under the crystal clear water. We saw all kinds of beautiful, tropical fish at the reef and my husband had a turtle swim right by his side! We love aqua action divers and would never have known about them had it not been for you. Sam and Diane are patient, funny and fun loving people. We are so grateful to them for giving me this amazing experience. We hope to go back and do it again, this time with our boys!

Upon our arrival in St. Maarten, we decided to stick dose to the ship and do “the touristy” thing by shopping! We spent a conSiderable amount of time (and money, ha ha) going up and down the main strip. We liked how we could sot at the restaurants and bars right across from the beach. Next time. we may venture to the other side of the island but for this time, it suited us perfectly. A lazy day. meandering around town, sipping rum drinks. Overall, this was an amazing vacation. I remarked to my husband that not once did anyone ever tell me, “we’re sorry, you can’t do that.” Every member of Royal Caribbean’s staff and crew always said, “you can do it. we’ll help you!” I truly felt free, “normal”, not bound by my disability on the ship like I am on land. We were thrilled with your service. expertise and knowledge of the Ship?» things to do and ports of call. We will NOT hesitate to use you again for future travel adventures. Thanks for making our 20th wedding anniversary so memorable!

 

Jeanne Arsenault; Dear Kristy, I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you about over wonderful Spring Break 2016 Caribbean cruise. Everything went smooth, from the plane ride to the transfers to the hotel. All the aspects of the trip, you planned, went without a hitch. We hopped on the Freedom of the Seas, all the details you explained helped us out. The trick to bring a large mouth water bottle saved us money and there were plenty of options to drink instead of soda. Then the Shore Trips were outstanding. All the people and details were complete. We had private or near private tours. The guides were exceptional and stopped anywhere we wanted. In St. Maarten, there was a strike on the French side of the Island. The cruise ship canceled many of the trips and we spoke to disappointed travelers when we headed back. We, on the other hand, booked our trip throughw Shore Trips. Our trip went well. We had an extended trip, saw both French and Dutch sides and our guide was the best. We had so much fun with him. Ron and I can’t thank you enough for your expertise. It truly made all the difference on this trip Even the last detail to hop on private transportation instead of the cruise ship ‘ transfers saved us another $25. It all added up to a wonderful vacation. Talk to you soon to finalize our next vacation to Alaska!

In February 2016 my husband and I went on a cruise through Wheelchair Escapes. It was not our first cruise, and not even our first cruise with Wheelchair Escapes. But this cruise was extra special. It stands out because of:

  1. Kristy
  2. Kristy
  3. Kristy!

Her bubbliness was contagious and her knowledge of accessibility was outstanding. This was so apparent in the minute details, like figuring out that a Braille menu might have been helpful for me in the dining room. Though we didn’t have one on the ship she found out how to get one for next time. She made it possible for us to have a room with a power door and a balcony that was so spacious that we could turn around without difficulty which is really something since my power chair is not small! She located, from her large circle of contacts, an accessible bus on St. Martin and we enjoyed a wonderful 3 hour tour. . And by traveling with others who used Wheelchair Escapes we met some wonderful folks from around the country. We ate some meals together, and though we were not required to be in a group, we now have many more friends from around the country who understand the challenges and joys of living with disability thanks to Kristy’s organizational and compassionate skills. Thank you for making our vacation truly wonderful.
